As the tents come down, and fine art ships back to fine galleries in New York City and Paris, Wynwood closes out what was a fantastic festival. To think – only years ago – Wynwood was a relatively under-utilized part of Downtown Miami with residential communities and sporadic industrial plazas; now Wynwood has come to life with vast industrial work areas, well-planned urban centers and exciting weekly, monthly and annual art events. Art Basel is definitely Wynwood’s most popular art event – drawing art buyers from across the world in the thousands to view high-end art in this hot new community. With dozens of major events, surrounded by satellite events and supported by local businesses – Wynwood hosted yet another successful Art Basel in Miami.
Local artists, local businesses and international art dealers all took advantage of this wonderful event but the greatest boost likely came to Midtown, Wynwood and the Design District’s image as a burgeoning art scene. Having already garnished attention from several annual Art Basel art festivals, the area is now arriving at its promised destination as an international art scene.
There were literally dozens of major events being held in areas like the Shops at Midtown, Wynwood’s famous walls, and the Design District’s fabulous galleries. The Shops at Midtown’s massive green space served as the perfect location for some of Art Basel’s best shows under a fabulously constructed temporary structure. Around the show, art-goers were treated to the fine dining options, great bars and convenient shops of the Shops at Midtown. This year’s crowd was larger than any previously experienced and brought an incredible amount of business, visitors and interest in the area.
Of course, the epicenter of Art Basel will always be the unbeatable tourist location of South Beach, but Wynwood has developed an uncanny reputation as a fabulous Art Basel satellite event. The many events at Midtown, Wynwood and the Design District make this area a must-see while in town for Art Basel.
