Three Cultural Institutions That are Shaping and Remodeling Miami Today

June 20, 2017

Miami is a city that is constantly booming with culture and is rich in diversity. It is increasingly growing in cultural projects created by people from across the world who choose to present their work to the public. Three cultural institutions, which are fairly new, have become main attractions here in Miami.

The Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum, Faena Forum, and the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) are three cultural institutions that are widely appreciated by tourists and locals. These cultural institutions are bringing people from different parts of the world because they too want to experience these artistic creations.

The Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science had its grand opening May 8, 2017. Located in the heart of downtown the museum has a beautiful view of the open bay.

The Frost Museum is split up into four parts to separate the planetarium, aquarium, and what is called the “north and west wings”. The museum was built in efforts to enlighten those about living organisms along with the science behind it, space and its systems, “the physics of flight”, the human body and its functions, the human mind, and following that there is much more.

It also holds a laser and light show that could hypnotize anybody instantly from the calming sounds to the soothing look of the lights. The Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science focuses on making the exhibit and interactive hands on experience with shows to engage all audiences.

Their main mission is to enrich people about the world that surrounds them. Since their grand opening of the museum they have been successful and have continued to bring culture and education to the city of Miami.

As Miami continues to grow its art scene so does the Institute of Contemporary Art. Beginning on December 1, 2017 the ICA will be opening a 20,000 square foot exhibition with a variety of sculptures, photographs, paintings, and a garden.

Their main goal is to bring in different works of art with the endeavor of sponsoring the artists to expose their work to their audience. The ICA focuses on exchanging art and ideas beyond a local level but on a national level. Throughout the year they hold different events that engage people.

Their next upcoming event is Thursday June 29, 2017 at 7pm. Although this event is closed to members it gives members an opportunity to meet a Miami-based integrative artist named Virgo. At this event they will have the leisure of engaging in an immersive virtual reality created by the artist.

Bringing all walks of artistic talents together the ICA has a free admissions fee providing a space for everyone to experience beautiful art at all times of the year.

With 43,000 square feet of event space and a 2,900 square foot amphitheater the Faena Forum is roaring with space for all types of cultural ventures. The Faena Forum is one of the three neighboring Faena structures that Alan Faena has created.

Designed by Rem Koolhaas and the OMA team, Alan Faena along with the designers produced masterpieces in Miami creating a “utopian place”.  The forum brings in local and international artists, producers, designers, and film-makers to conceive a piece of work that is structured specifically to work on-site.

Frequently changing, the Faena Forum’s most recent event is called the “June Film Cycle”. This event goes on throughout June, and it is a showing of independent films from directors and artist across the world.

Alan Faena once said this in his interview with Forbes, “We have this possibility to create a utopian place and make it a reality. We can create an environment to really change cities,” and that is exactly what they did.
