The MiMo area of Biscayne Boulevard in Miami, Florida is currently undergoing an exciting period of transformation, with new boutique shops, restaurants, residences, hotels, and more springing up daily all along the boulevard. Furthermore, investors are continuing to buy up properties in the MiMo district, which had been in a state of gradual decline for the past several decades, and is now at the heart of a general wave of gentrification in Miami.
According to Wikipedia, “The area along Biscayne Boulevard is now the designated “MiMo Biscayne Boulevard Historic District” or more uniquely named “MiMo on BiBo”, for “Miami Modern on Biscayne Boulevard”. MiMo Historic District runs roughly from 50th Street to 77th Street along Biscayne Boulevard.”
The city of Miami, and the MiMo Biscayne Association, established the MiMo (short for Miami Modern) historic district in 2006 to protect and preserve the unique and largely intact MiMo architecture and the 1950’s ambiance of Biscayne Boulevard. However, there were also hopes in significant area redevelopment with establishing the MiMo district. This is quickly becoming a reality with condos, offices and much more desirable property currently being developed and in the works.
“In a city undergoing a wholesale reinvention, one crane at a time, the MiMo district is carving out its own distinct identity as a low-scale, stylish but unflashy Main Street for the gentrifying collection of residential neighborhoods that flank the boulevard, ” reports the Miami Herald. “Condos and offices are also part of the coming mix, suggesting the trend has real legs.”
