Miami Central Station Taking Shape at Miami International Airport

July 18, 2013

Miami Central Station, scheduled for completion by early 2014, is a rapid transit, commuter rail, intercity rail, and intercity bus union station currently under construction near Miami International Airport. Also called Miami Airport Station, the project is comprised to two phases; the first phase involved the construction of the MIA Mover, Metrobus terminal, and Metrorail concourse, already completed as of July 28, 2012; the second phase entails the construction of the Tri-Rail and Amtrak concourse still under way. Miami Central Station is part of the Miami Intermodal Center- the comprehensive transportation project with various components to improve transit by the Florida Department of Transportation.

Well into construction, the Miami Central Station is taking shape quite nicely. Despite a minor setback brought about by miscommunication about the size of the Amtrak trains, causing project managers and construction workers to alter the lengths of the platforms, construction is continuing at a furious pace. Recent photographs of the center depict a near-completed building with features such as huge awnings shading ground-level platforms, window louvers, long escalators, glass windows in place, and concrete walls and supports completed.

When completed, the station will serve Amtrak, Tri-Rail, Metrorail, and Metrobus, and will provide a people mover connection to the airport via the MIA Mover. It will provide connectivity between Palm Beach County, Fort Lauderdale, Miami, and the Florida keys, making regional travel easier for residents and visitors. The roadways in and around the busy airport are already profiting from the project, exhibiting less congestion. The MIC also has its own website dedicated to providing the public with any and all information concerning all aspects of the project, including detailed renditions of the completed design and construction schedules.
